What is Stroke Recovery and Rehabilitation?
Strokes are commonly caused by a blood clot. The brain is then deprived of blood flow and oxygen. Without intervention, the lack of oxygen causes cell death within the brain. This can have a significant impact on speech, motor skills, and cognitive abilities.
Following a stroke, the goal for rehabilitation is to return a patient to the highest level of functionality possible. Due to the stroke, patients may not be able to perform everyday actions so the rehabilitation process involves teaching a patient how to do these actions again – from learning to speak, walk, manage eye-hand coordination, and more. In some instances, a full recovery might not be possible so compensatory strategies are taught.
Who Should Participate in Stroke Recovery and Rehabilitation?
About two-thirds of survivors need stroke rehabilitation to recover from the effects of stroke. Stroke patients can come to Generations at Applewood to start intensive therapies aimed at restoring neurological function. For most patients, recovery from stroke takes six months to one year of focused, intensive rehabilitative therapy.
