What is Stroke Recovery and Rehabilitation?

Strokes are commonly caused by a blood clot. The brain is then deprived of blood flow and oxygen. Without intervention, the lack of oxygen causes cell death within the brain. This can have a significant impact on speech, motor skills, and cognitive abilities.

Following a stroke, the goal for rehabilitation is to return a patient to the highest level of functionality possible. Due to the stroke, patients may not be able to perform everyday actions so the rehabilitation process involves teaching a patient how to do these actions again – from learning to speak, walk, manage eye-hand coordination, and more. In some instances, a full recovery might not be possible so compensatory strategies are taught.

Who Should Participate in Stroke Recovery and Rehabilitation?

About two-thirds of survivors need stroke rehabilitation to recover from the effects of stroke. Stroke patients can come to Generations at Applewood to start intensive therapies aimed at restoring neurological function.
